ABOUT OUR PROGRAM:

We are a non-profit organization with a group of volunteers that adopt or assigned a person that is going through a serious illness, extended illness or needs some encouragement and a little cheering up. We send cards and gifts to these people each week in hopes to encourage and to cheer them up. These people are going through something tough in their lives and we are hoping to help them in a simple way. Think about how you like getting mail like on your birthday and just feel someone cares. BUT BEWARE! YOU might just get as big of a blessing out of it as they do!

Volunteers-You sign up by filling out a form under volunteer.  You are then sent an assignment with information such as their likes, dislikes, things they can have, their hobbies, etc.  You then send a card or gift, or both each week. 

Know someone that needs encouragement?  Sign them up but we would prefer their permission.  We then assign them to an Angel or volunteer.  If we have a volunteer available that has been something like they are going through, we try to assign them to this person.

We have added another way that you can help our cause.  It's very simple, just by shopping online.  Igive.com has different online stores that will donate a percentage of your purchase at their store to your cause.  If you click on the igive.com icon, it will take you to the page to sign up for our cause.  It will explain better on the website what all you need to do. 

The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Children’s Hospital of Alabama services children from all over the southeast requiring bone marrow transplants for diseases such as leukemia and lymphomas, rare genetic diseases, blood disorders and most recently sickle cell disease. The purpose of our program is to treat children with otherwise terminal illnesses in hopes of offering them a healthy life after transplant. Patients admitted to our program often spend at least three months in Birmingham receiving treatment. Most of this time is spent in the hospital. If the patient has complications related to transplant their stay could be extended. Once the patient is discharged from the hospital they are required to stay within a close proximity to the hospital so they can be seen in our outpatient clinic for follow up care.

The patients and families in our unit go through major life changes while they are here. They are in so much need of love and support during this difficult time in their lives. The children love to get mail while they are on the unit! Often times they will hang their cards on the windows in their rooms to "show off" to the staff! When they are feeling well the patients enjoy coloring, playing games, doing puzzles and cross-words and other low intensity activities. The children also enjoy watching movies and playing online. We have a lot of "artists" on our unit! These patients spend their time looking for things to create and decorate so they can make their room pretty and send gifts to their family and friends at home.

Our hope it that every child that is treated on our unit will have a positive outcome and a positive experience while they are here being treated. Although we know we cannot always guarantee a positive outcome, we do our best to make sure that the patients and their families feel well cared for and loved. Our mission at CHS is to make children the center of our lives. Our hope is that you will join us in this mission!
